Overkill

October 3rd, 2007 by Zack Butts

The OVERKILL command is fantastic for AUTOCAD 2004 and upwards as it deletes all duplicate objects within the selection, it also combines all objects with the same properties that meet eg. all lines that overlap. Just type Overkill at the Command Prompt select all objects needed choose your variables, press OK then its done, This really cuts down file sizes and makes drawings easier to manage.

 I have used the Overkill in my menu, and found that it does not always like referenced files. Sometimes it hangs up so if you use the command remember to save the drawing first.

Thanks Jonathan. That’s a very good point.

Also, sorry your comment was stuck in moderation for 2 months. I didn’t realize it was setup that way.

Overkill works fine on small selections, if you have a large drawing use it in small bites. It will delete duplicate objects even on different layers so be careful there. It will not delete objects on top of each other unless they are the same coordinates, so if you are looking to delete lines on top of lines it may not work. That being said it is a great tool for cleaning up drawings that have gone through several disciplines that have laid background on top of background.
